The Langtang Area is not so heavily trekked as the
Annapurna and Everest regions. Under the Langtang National Park Scheme, the area
has retained its flora and fauna intact. But still the messages have to be
passed on to the local Sherpa and Tamang communities about the issues of
conservation, deforestation and waste disposal so that it does not follow the
same footpath as the Everest and Annapurna Regions. Precaution is better than
cure!
The itinerary combines waste collection, environmental
awareness and protection with a trek in the remote and spectacular views of the
Langtang Valley, with the high mountain lakes at Gosainkund and the beautiful
Helambu Valley.
Following the Trisuli River north out of Kathmandu, we
travel through Tadi Bazaar and Dhunche to Syabrubensi, a Sherpa village located
at the very edge of the Langtang National Park. We pass through oak and
rhododendron forests as we travel through Syabru and Sing Gompa to a high
plateau, where the sacred lake Gosainkund is located. Crossing the Llaurebena
Pass (4,610m), we continue south, leaving the Langtang region behind us as we
travel through the Helambu valley to Gul Bhanjyang. From here it's just a few
days trek back to Kathmandu.
On each day of the trek we will invite local people to our
camps and highlight the need for environmental issues to be addressed. Seminars
will be held on safe waste disposal and how to stop this waste being generated,
as well as highlighting the issue of environmental awareness. As well as full
days spent in villages directly helping to clean up. All waste collected on the
treks will be brought back to Kathmandu for recycling or proper disposal.
